1. Watch the two videos above
2. Pick one excerpt from 21 Things You May Not Know About The Indian Act (PDFs above. Choose one) and read it
3. In a paragraph of a minimum of 300 words reflect on the following:
1. What are 5 new things that you learned?
2. Did anything surprise you or anger you?
3. Did it help explain any current issues in Canada?
4. Can you connect what you read/viewed to anything else you have learned or know about?
5. While parts of the act have been repealed (Residential Schools, Banning the sale of alcohol, prohibiting Indigenous people from voting, banning ceremonies and language) the Indian Act is still in place today. We are actually the only country left in the world with legislation based on a race of people.
One current event that was affected by it was the pipeline protests. The Band Councils (European governing system put in place by Indian Act) had approved the pipeline, but the Hereditary chiefs (traditional governing body before the Indian Act) did not support it. (this had mostly to do with the location of the proposed pipeline). Who has the right to approve projects on traditional land? Which governing body as more power the Band Council or Hereditary Chiefs? (for more on this issue see: https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-wet-suwet-en-protests-arrests-1.4805620)
6. What are your thoughts currently on the Indian Act? Should we keep it? Or get rid of it? Why or Why not?
7. What questions do you still have about the Indian Act?

1. Read your novel for at least an hour.
2. Make sure to complete a few sticky notes (Example below). I gave you a sheet with some ideas for the sticky notes, but basically just write a quote and why you picked it. You need to have 20 completed by the end of the novel.
3. Please send me an email with your first impressions of the novel (Ie. What do you think of it so far? Is it a book you want to continue to read? What is your favorite part so far? I have no issue you with you changing your novel, it just need to be done as soon as you make that decision. I want you to finish your novel so it is really important to me that you like it.
Reading Deadlines (these are minimal amounts, if you want to read ahead that is fine. You also may come and ask for more than one book! (This warms my English teacher heart :) )

4. Sticky Note Example
“For once a story is told, it cannot be called back. Once told, it is loose in the world” (King 10)
Explanation (I will show you two ways I would have responded to this quote, you just need to do one on your sticky notes):
1. I chose this quote because I think that it represents a theme of the essay. King is trying to show why a story is never just a story, it has an impact on the world when it is taken seriously. This can be seen with the creation story Genesis which has framed Western worldview.
2. I have a personal connection to this quote as it reminds me of the power of gossip. Stories that are spread without any truth can harm a person forever. I had a friend in high school and there was a rumor going around that she had had a relationship with another student in our class. It wasn't true, but people believed it because they "heard it from a friend" It ruined her social life and reputation, yet it was a completely made up story.
Other things to consider when explaining why you picked your quote:
1. Does it show something about a character?
2. A Theme?
3. Did a character learn something?
4. Did it impact you in an emotional way?
5. It is a reoccurring image?
6. Beautiful language?
7. A connection?
8. A powerful moment?
2. Make sure to complete a few sticky notes (Example below). I gave you a sheet with some ideas for the sticky notes, but basically just write a quote and why you picked it. You need to have 20 completed by the end of the novel.
