Tuesday January 8

1. Review Beginning of Cold War Notes
2. Explain how the cold war was a cold war in that it did not involve direct fighting. What did it involve? (Spying, influence, lack of communication).
3. Chapter overview: -Read the chapter overview up until what we have studied so far.
4. Discuss the hotpoints in Cold war: Cold war at home: Igor Guezenko, USA McCarthyism, the red scare/blacklisting445. Play Game to illustrate McCarthyism
5. Discuss the United Nations. Show pictures, watch Simpsons clip, read over sheet. Goal is collective security. Discuss the approaches the United can take and how the un is set up. Play Simpson’s Clip from DAS BUS “The UN” Season 9, Disk 3
-Simpson’s hold a Model UN club – Principal Skinner– “do you want to squabble or be like real UN?”
-Distribute the handout on United Nations. Explain how it is set up.
-Then have students read the back – write comments, underline important facts.
-What is the UNs main goal? What three things can it do to an aggressor?

2. Briefly explain the major Cold War Conflicts
-KOREA: Korea is divided into communist north, democratic south. N invades S. UN force backed by USA/Can helps. 1953. Cease fire was reached.
SUEZ: BR/FR – Gammal Nasser seizes it. 1956. – Threatens Israel, BR/FR support Israeli war. USA is mad. Louis St. Laurent (our pm denounces Britain--- not support). Min of Ext. Affairs, Lester B. Pearson sends in a UN force to peace-keep. Gets noble prize for defusing the conflict.
Cuban Missile. 1962 – Kennedy. Blockade of Cuba. Brinkmanship. Khrushchev backs down.
Vietnam: N vs S. 1960s send troops, not just $ aid. USSR/Chin supply North. 1973 usa leaves. By 1975 – communists win.
3. Gallery Walk -- Convert classroom into a “bomb shelter.” Put up nuclear symbols and a –bomb blast stickers. Get students to take notes from the posters around the room. Play protest music in background to give a taste of the time period.

-Ask class: how many nations are in Canada?
-What is a nation (geographical/Culture/language/identity/government/ can there be a nation within a nation? Should we consider everyone a distinct nation?
-Aboriginals, French, English… where do we stop?
2. INTRODUCTION History bites: (clip below)
Cultural identity. French fear their culture will be overwhelmed.
-Explain Hyphenated Canadianism (Anglo-Canadian, Irish-Canadian, Ukrainian-Canadian --- or should we be Canadian – more like the USA melting pot or our multiculturalism)
-Canada Car Ride clip

-Ask students what people live in Canada and what is a Canadian based on this clip?
3. How did we get to all of this fighting? Explain multicultural policies while they take notes
4. Multicultural Banquet
5. Will have a quiz Monday on Multicultural policy, French English relations and Aboriginal relations. It will be open book.

7. Have students highlight in one colour in their notes three ways First Nations people have been mistreated and then in another colour three ways First Nations have taken control of their own affairs.
