1. Show video of cow being stunned in a slaughterhouse. Read small excerpt from slaughterhouse article (river of blood part). Which one is better? Why? This is why imagery is important. Poet must use words to make reader understand what they are saying and to experience feelings they may have never had before.
2. Poets use imagery to get the reader to really identify with their subject matter, make them see, hear, taste, feel and smell whatever they are talking about. Define: Words/phrases that appeal to the sense and paint a picture in the readers mind.
3. Hand out imagery sheet, but explain that we are going to do a more interactive study of imagery, but that they can fill out their answers on the sheet.
Explain that each answer must be a minimum of a sentence and have VIVID details, we will vote on the strongest images for a prize. Hand out a piece of candy to each group. Get them to create a 5 sense poem for their object (_____________ Feels like, looks like, smells like, tastes like, sounds like. Get them to write it on 11x17 to put on display. Share their poems and vote on best one.

5. Show clip from Jaws where the boat is falling apart and Jaws is still trying to eat them. When you see a movie like this, what do you associate with the Shark? What are other cultural associations of Sharks? Record their answers on the board. Share facts about real Shark attacks. (1:56:30-2:00:00)
6. Read through the poem “The Shark”
May answer on the Sheet by annotating (circle images and put in margin what sense they appeal to. Write in the blank space what you think the theme is and a min. of 2 examples to prove it
KEY:
Theme: the shark is the ultimate killing machine (compared to a machine)
“Part vulture, part wolf/Part neither –for his blood was cold”
“Tubular, tapered, smoke blue”
“Like a piece of sheet-iron”
“With a knife edge”
SIGHT: “stirred not a bubble,” smoke blue,”
SOUND: Snapped at a flat-fish”
TOUCH: “For his blood was cold”
SMELL: “smoke blue”
TASTE "snapped at a dead fish"

Situational: opposite happens of what was expected à Show ironic pictures and sayings
Dramatic (horror movie irony): audience or characters know something that one character does not know (Show the Shining where Halloran is killed)

1) Explain that on the exam they will be responsible for writing a paragraph on the theme of a poem and that is what we will be learning today.
2) Remind them how to find theme (major character development, title, lines that are emphasized, ending, major image or symbol).
3) Hand out the following fill in the blank notes and complete together on the overhead
A Good theme paragraph contains the following:
a) In your topic sentence, include the author and title, a theme statement and briefly how you are going to argue it
b) Use at lease three specific examples that prove your argument, consider how lines in the poem reflect the theme, how imagery reflects the theme, word choice, style, poem format, content and the title if you are feeling brave consider how poetic terms reflect the theme (ie metaphor, simile, personification, symbolism etc.),
c) Thoroughly explain why each SPECIFIC example proves your topic sentence
d) Have a strong insightful conclusion (For example, how this theme connects to your life, but without saying I, we, or you, or a strong final thought)
4) Ask them if there has ever been a time that they refused to compromise even when they realized they were wrong.

7) Write their ideas of lines on the board that support the theme
